So a usual question I'm asked when I meet someone for the first time and they find out I'm Mormon is, 'So what makes your church different?"
Well, lots of things.
How much time do you have? A minute. Hmmm....well, temples, the Book of Mormon, eternal families, the plan of salvation....really I need more time to tell.
But lots of things are the same as other churches as well.
We worship Jesus as our Savior, believe the Bible to be true, grace, repentance....seriously I need more time, a minute will not do.
When I was outside bouncing my baby in the hall and the speaker announced that Elder Quentin L. Cook was coming and giving a special stake conference to our stake on May 2nd....I thought, that is what I should say. That is one thing that is different. We have a prophet and apostles. Like a real one. Like twelves apostles, with the same power as Peter, James and John.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has over 12 million members, most of which do not live in Utah with the majority outside the United States. So seeing an apostle in real life, besides hearing what they say on General Conference is very rare. I have had some instances to shake an apostles hand, especially since I lived in Utah for a time, but my kids have not.
On May 2nd, after Elder Quentin Cook speaks from 10 to 11:30 up here in Santa Clarita, he is going leave the extra time to meet the members. My kids will be able to shake his hand and feel his spirit. I know the concept of real prophets and apostle in 2010 might be new and strange for many people, but all I know is when I hear and listen to them, I do not doubt it. I wonder what he is going to say.
Let me know if you want to come. I might even be in the choir....
p.s. remembering the Apostles we have met in my life
Thomas S. Monson when I was a kid at a restaurant
Neal A. Maxwell (who has since passed) in Florida sometime in high school...my memory is fading.
Boyd K Packer and Russell M. Nelson on our flight after our wedding
Henry B. Eyring in Bountiful.
A few years ago we ate at the same place as M. Russell Ballard and talked to my brother and parents.
Jason said that L Tom Perry said hi once at BYU from afar.
Jason said he met Elder Uchdorf before he was an apostle when Jason was on his mission.
