Important Cookie Tip

I hate cookies this morning. Both batches. I just encountered a very important tip in cookie making. While I have limited talents, I consider cookie making is one of them. I am not joking. That is why I was so disturbed to pull these beauties out of the oven at 8 a.m. Why baking cookies at 8 a.m.? Well actually at 7:30 a.m. I had all three kiddies around me mixing and dumping ...all on chairs and stools and taking turns nicely. Luke can even get out the ingredients and mix it by himself so I was enjoying the nice morning with my kids. I already had makeup on that day and was dressed and I thought I the multi-tasking was going so well. RED FLAG

Which is why I decided to double the recipe and freeze some of it. I never double cookie recipes. Cause I usually don't want to personally gooble all that cookie dough up. But, I was going to visit my friend's new baby this week and off to a play date this morning (Californism for coming over with your children to hang out with that persons children, always scheduled events.)
so I was thinking it would doubling it would save me some time later in the week, and I thought I was thinking i was very smart (RED FLAG!).

So after I dumped in the

2 CUPS OF SHORTENING (holy cow that is alot, I hope its dispersed really small through this mongo-batch),

4 CUPS OF OATMEAL,

BAG OF CHOCOLATE CHIPS,

4 EGGS, etc ingredients, I was totally stumped when these came out. The battered tasted nicely and all my kids got spoonfuls. I reread the recipe over and over and not a clue.

UNTIL (here comes the tip) I noticed the full bowl of 4 cups of flour that was still on the other counter! FLOUR.

DON'T FORGET THE FLOUR! It is a very important ingredient that will affect the outcome of your cookies. And if you forget the flour you will have to chuck (throw away) all that lovely unusable cookie dough, and empty the dough that you already put in the freezer and then you will wine and cry and your kids will mourn with you. And then you will mentally calculate how much that cost you and how you really wish you could eat a normal cookie to comfort you in your flour-i-hate-you pain.

I have to agree with you . . . seeing all that cookie dough go into the trash is depressing. But you've taught us all a great lesson! Gosh, I wanna eat a cookie so bad right now!

brooke, i always, ALWAYS, leave ingredients out. or put in the wrong measurements. i am notorious for it. no joke. i have found that salt is another big one you never want to exclude. so don't feel bad. i am so bad at it that i have to be in total concentration when i am measuring and dumping ingredients.

That's why place and bake cookies are my favorite. I can't tell you the last time I made cookies from scratch. How did they taste? They may not be pretty, but since they have oatmeal in them they might still be edible.

heather...oh so not edible. that immediately crumbled to a nasty mess.

I have forgotten ingredients so many times that now I pull all the ingredients I need out and put them on the counter. Then as I add them to the bowl I put them away. If nothing is left by the end I'm generally good to go! :)

wow, flour seems like a pretty obvious one, especially 4 CUPS! it's okay brooke, you have other amazing qualities, baking doesn't have to be one of them.

You're hilarious girl! I'm still getting over the fact that you were up and functioning well enough to be baking cookies with all three kids at 7:30 in the morning. Sheesh!

I think you deserve to go buy yourself some yummy premade cookies and forget about all the money you had to waste. Knowing you though, most of the ingredients probably came from your food storage, so it was cheap anyway.

Don't you just hate that... if the dough was good to eat, just keep it to eat alone or with ice cream : ) xoxomom

It made for a GREAT post, which I believe seems to be a really GREAT quality of yours.
They always make me laugh.
As long as you and your kids had a good time together, then it was successful.

Maybe it is karma, something to do with the fact that for 6 weeks you did good with no treats (and felt great for it), now its over and your baking cookies at 7:30am!! maybe someone is trying to tell you something!!

Hey Hey!! What is up Brooke? I am happy you found us through some blog hopping. I had a great time reading about your family - life with 3 kids rules! Your hubby looks really familiar - did we know him freshman year? Anyway, hope all is going great, it was fun hearing from you!
